ABOUT CATHOLICOSE

 

Catholicos (plural Catholicoi) is a title used by the Patriarch (head/regional head bishop) of the Eastern churches. The word is a transliteration of the Greek , meaning concerning the whole, universal or general. Any Apostolic and national church has the authority to declare and call its head, Catholicose, Pope, or Patriarch and the area of influence of a catholicos is a catholicate.      

Thus the head of Indian Orthodox Church is stated as "Catholicos". There have been seven catholicoses in the Indian Orthodox Church whose names have been listed below: 

  • HH Baselios Marthoma Paulose II , 8th  Catholicose of the East in Malankara
  • HH Baselios Marthoma Didymos I , 7th  Catholicose of the East in Malankara        
  • HH Baselios Marthoma Mathews II , 6th Catholicose of the East in Malankara      
  • His Holiness Baselios Marthoma Mathews I, 5th Catholicos of the East in Malankara
  • His Holiness Baselios Augen I, 4th Catholicos of the East in Malankara     
  • His Holiness Baselios Geevarghese II, 3rd Catholicos of the East in Malankara         
  • His Holiness Baselios Geevarghese I, 2nd Catholicos of the East in Malankara
  • His Holiness Baselios Paulos I, 1st Catholicos of the East in Malankara
